GLOV 1998 Annual Statistical Report
1998 ANNUAL STATISTICAL REPORT
GAY MEN AND LESBIANS OPPOSING VIOLENCE (GLOV)
WASHINGTON, DC
Listed below is the raw data for incidents of reported bias crime against
the gay lesbian bisexual and transgender (glbt) community. GlOV received
reports of 100 incidents in 1998; a 16 percent increase from 1997 incidents.
It is important to understand some particulars about this data:
- These are cases reported to GLOV. This does not represent
all the cases of bias crime against our community in 1998. We estimate
that for every one crime that is reported, 10 crimes go unreported.
- Offender data is not available in all cases. The offender data listed
in this report comes information supplied by the victims recollection of
the incident.
- In some cases certain items were not recorded – either the victim could
not recollect the information or was not asked the question. Many victims
call directly after the incident has occurred.
- Victims reported incidents to the police in 26 cases.
- The highest number of incidents occurred in July and August.
This raw data is taken from GLOV intake forms, which are filled out by
hotline volunteers when they receive calls. The specifics around each
incident are confidential and no narrative about the specifics of each
incident is included in this report.
