24th annual wreath laying at Tomb of the Unknowns held on July 9
The Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC (GLAA) held its rescheduled 24th annual wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, July 9, at 3:35 p.m. The originally scheduled ceremony on Memorial Day had to be put off when GLAA's wreath was lost after it was delivered to the appropriate officials at the Cemetery as it has been every year since 1980.
This solemn military ceremony honors all servicemembers who have given their lives in defense of America, including but not limited to the many thousands of gay and lesbian servicemembers who have done so. The ceremony has been conducted every year since 1980 by GLAA and coordinated by Dr. Frank Kameny, a GLAA founder, community leader, and World War II combat veteran. A representative of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) also participated in the July 9 ceremony.
