Evans withdraws support for proposed Office of GLBT Affairs

[Addendum: GLAA also learned on October 7 that Councilmember Graham has canceled the planned October 16, 2002 hearing on Bill 14-719 at the request of Mayor Williams. In recent weeks it became clear that the city's projected FY 2003 budget shortfall made spending on a new office unrealistic. At a meeting with his GLBT Advisory Committee on September 25 in which he discussed new budget balancing efforts, the Mayor said of the proposed Office of GLBT Affairs, "It's not going to happen." While GLAA opposes the proposed office in principle and not only for financial reasons, we commend these constructive actions by Mayor Williams and Councilmember Graham which acknowledge that the city, including the gay community, has greater priorities.]
