PROCLAMATION


GAY AND LESBIAN ACTIVISTS ALLIANCE DAY

APRIL 19, 2001

WHEREAS, on April 19, 2001, the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, D.C. (GLAA) will be celebrating its 30th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, GLAA was founded in April 1971 to advance the cause of equal rights and social equality for lesbians and gay men living in the District of Columbia; and

WHEREAS, GLAA is the oldest continuously active gay and lesbian civil rights organization in the country which has fought to end discrimination and improve relations between the District's gay, lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizens and the District's public safety agencies; and

WHEREAS, GLAA continues to fight for effective public health strategies in the fight against AIDS, the end discrimination, and has kept residents informed about issues that affect the gay and lesbian community:

NOW THEREFORE, I, THE MAYOR OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, do hereby proclaim April 19, 2001, as "GAY AND LESBIAN ACTIVISTS ALLIANCE DAY" in Washington, D.C.
